Meet Our Executive Leadership Team
Joe Nunes, FSA, FCIA, ICD.D
Joseph Nunes, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Actuarial Solutions Inc, has practiced in the area of pensions and retiree health plans for over 30 years. He has experience with many types of plans including single-employer, multi-employer, private sector, government, unionized, non-unionized, as well as registered and non-registered executive plans.
Joe has a wide range of experience including pension plan valuations, converting plans from defined benefit to defined contribution, and plan wind-ups. Joe has also supported the negotiation of changes to benefit levels and ancillary benefits and has significant experience in the governance of defined contribution programs. In addition, Joe can provide clients with expert independent advice on mergers and acquisitions, as well as matters before arbitrators and the courts.
Joe is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries having graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics in 1989. Joe is a graduate of the Director’s Education Program at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Joe’s experience includes working in Toronto at an insurance brokerage and in the retirement practice at Mercer.
Jason Vary, FSA, FCIA
Jason Vary, President of Actuarial Solutions Inc., has practiced in defined benefit pension and retiree health plans for twenty years. He has experience with many plan designs including single-employer, multi-employer, private sector, government, unionized, non-unionized, as well as registered and non-registered executive plans. Jason works with clients on many projects including:
- valuation of plans for funding purposes
- accounting for plans under Canadian, U.S. and International GAAP
- revision and/or negotiation of benefit levels and ancillary benefits
- asset transfers between defined benefit plans
- conversion of defined benefit to defined contribution plans
- wind-up of defined benefit and/or defined contribution pension plans
He also provides clients with independent due diligence services with respect to mergers and acquisitions, and expert independent advice on matters before arbitrators and the courts.
In addition to his role as President, Jason has a blend of technical skills and expert advice that allow him to move seamlessly between the roles of consultant and actuary. He oversees all consulting assignments for the firm to ensure technical accuracy of all advice, as well as consistency of presentation.
Jason joined Actuarial Solutions Inc. in 2006. A Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries, Jason graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics
Dean Newell, FSA, FCIA
Dean Newell is a Vice President of Actuarial Solutions Inc. and manages ASI’s actuarial practice. Dean performs valuations for pension and post-retirement benefit plans for the purpose of funding, accounting, and plan wind-up. In addition, he has experience consulting with plan sponsors on matters affecting pension and post-retirement benefit plans, including plan design, plan conversion, benefit improvement costing, legislative compliance, plan documentation, plan administration, and risk management.
